How certification works

Our certification is a simple, honest measure of how well a business looks after people. It is built to recognise the good things you already do, using standards the world already trusts.

It comes down to how many pillars you reach

Wellbeing is measured across five pillars. The number of pillars you achieve is the tier you earn. That is the whole idea.

Mood Booster Bronze Certified badge

Bronze

1 pillar

A real start. You look after people well in one clear area.

Mood Booster Silver Certified badge

Silver

2 pillars

Genuine breadth. Wellbeing shows up across two sides of the business.

Mood Booster Gold Certified badge

Gold

3 pillars

A standard setter. People are cared for across three areas or more.

The five pillars of wellbeing

Each pillar holds a few measures. You achieve a pillar when you meet every measure within it, most often by holding a single recognised standard that already covers them.

Mental

3 measures
  • Senior ownership and manager capability

Leadership actively backs mental health, and line managers are equipped to spot and support it.

  • Non-discrimination and fair treatment

No employee or applicant is disadvantaged for having a mental health condition, and reasonable adjustments are made.

  • Support tools and signposting

Staff have access to genuine support, such as counselling, occupational health, or clear signposting to help.

Recognised by, for example

  • Mental Health at Work Commitment
  • Mindful Employer Charter
  • Mind's Workplace Wellbeing Index

Inclusive

3 measures
  • Names a protected group

A specific public commitment to an underrepresented group, such as disability, race, age, or the Armed Forces community.

  • Concrete employment action

Real action in recruitment, retention, or development, not just a statement of values.

  • Organisational ownership

A named senior sponsor is accountable for delivering the commitment.

Recognised by, for example

  • Disability Confident (Level 2+)
  • Armed Forces Covenant
  • Race at Work Charter
  • Age-friendly Employer Pledge

Financial

3 measures
  • Independently verified

Pay and conditions are checked by a recognised external body, not self-declared.

  • Exceeds the legal minimum

The business goes beyond what the law requires on pay, hours, or pension.

  • Tackles real financial insecurity

Addresses a genuine cost-of-living need: a wage, hours, or pension people can rely on.

Recognised by, for example

  • Living Wage
  • Living Hours
  • Living Pension

all Living Wage Foundation accreditations

Physical

2 measures
  • Employer-funded or facilitated

The business actively provides, arranges, or subsidises support for physical health.

  • Ongoing, standing provision

A continuing commitment staff can use, not a one-off event or campaign.

Recognised by, for example

  • Cycle Friendly Employer
  • Workplace Wellbeing Charter
  • Better Health at Work Award
  • London Healthy Workplace Award

Or shown with evidence*

  • Cycle to Work scheme
  • Employer-funded health insurance
  • Gym or fitness membership

Community

2 measures
  • Outward-directed contribution

The business gives money, time, or a formal public commitment to a cause, community, or environmental goal beyond its own operations.

  • Ongoing, not one-off

A standing commitment or recurring practice, not a single event or one-time donation.

Recognised by, for example

  • 1% for the Planet
  • SME Climate Commitment

Or shown with evidence*

  • A charity partnership, such as a share of sales, till round-ups, or sponsored events
  • Employer-supported volunteering

* A few routes have no public register, so we confirm them with evidence you provide, such as a Cycle to Work scheme or a charity partnership. Everything else is confirmed through publicly available records.

These are examples of qualifying routes, not a fixed list. The framework keeps growing as new recognised standards are added.

One recognised standard can earn a whole pillar

Most businesses are already closer than they think. Holding a single recognised charter, like the Living Wage or the Mental Health at Work Commitment, means you already meet every measure in that pillar. There is nothing new to prove.

Because these standards are held publicly, we can recognise them from real records rather than paperwork you have to gather. You show us what you hold, and the pillars fall into place.
